I am glad this blog has helped in you!...Dear CSD6,

I am glad this blog has helped in you!

My initial plan was to use DIT Part I during 5th term. I ended up not utilizing that resource and only used Part II during my focused prep time.

The entire process of going through UW was EXTREMELY slow. I can say this …it’s not the speed at which you go through the questions that count. It’s all about the process that takes you there. Let me explain. Each question you do consist of multiple choices along with detailed explanations as to why each choice is incorrect, then going further and explaining what that answer choice mean in the context of the question….for the most part. Going through each question and understanding the correct answers AND THE INCORRECT answers will be instrumental to your learning. After you spend a while doing questions from a similar topic, the explanations will become repetitive.

Don’t feel anxious CSD6, take it one step at a time. Don’t look at the entire UW Q-Bank as something you need to take on all at once. Each question has tremendous teaching value. Learn from each and everyone one of your mistakes. That’s the best advice I can give in regards to UW. I finished UW Q-bank a few weeks after 5th term was over and began my second round in random timed mode. Reason for random timed is to mimic Step 1.

I annotated EVERYTHING into either First Aid or Pathoma.

I am unable to provide any personal opinions on the quality of Kaplan videos. I did hear from certain students that the biochemistry and I believe microbiology sections were done nicely. That’s all I can really say about Kaplan. My personal opinion is that a review course is good if you need structure or need help in reviewing all the subjects. For instance, I did not remember all the minute details in biochemistry. I would find myself looking through the biochem section in FA and not retaining the information. The DIT videos ALONG WITH COMPLETING THE WORKBOOK forced me to go over that aspect I was simply glossing over and not retaining. From what I’ve heard, Kaplan is detailed…which is a good and bad thing. Good because they cover most information you need to do well. Bad because you will spend a lot of time listening to things you already know, ie What the difference between DNA, RNA, virus, bacteria, gram positive, gram negative, type I, type II muscle fibers, etc. Other students have told me that Kaplan starts from the basics. I don’t know how long they stay at that beginners level…but… remember that USMLE Step 1 DOES NOT SIMPLY TEST YOUR ABILITY TO REGURGITATE THE INFORMATION. Memorizing for the sake of memorizing won’t get you very far. This is where I feel review courses are lacking in. They can lecture on all the information needed and give you tips and tricks to do fantastically well on Step 1 …and you can spend all your time learning that…but what it really comes down to is taking the information you have and APPLYING IT to various clinical scenarios via doing questions and LEARNING FROM YOUR MISTAKES by reading the reason EACH ANSWER CHOICE is incorrect, not just the brief summary statement given at the end. With all that being said, I would still have done the DIT videos for my Step I prep.

I took my practice test 6 days before the actual exam.

The remaining answers to your questions were addressed in “5th Term School of Medicine Information and Advice SGU” and in this post. Please read again and I will be happy to answer any further questions you have that I have not already answered.

I know it’s extremely daunting…the preparation one needs to take on for Step 1, but you have to trust in the process and know that with consistent effort and hard work, it will pay off. I am in the process of applying for residency, which is in a few hours. Again, let me know if you have further questions after re-reading the previous post and this post. I wish you all the best CSD6!Katherinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05031301138680457508noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7438114895015996935.post-32706474467385436292014-09-13T21:42:50.600-07:002014-09-13T21:42:50.600-07:00Only used FA for anatomy. Did you do the Part I during Term 5? and Part II during dedicated step prep? How many days did you allot for DIT part 2? I was thinking of doing the "45 days" over the course of 15 days to really get through FA early on in my step prep. This is of course after finishing term 5.

2) During Term 5, did you do a lot of UW questions during the week or mostly on the weekend? Did you complete the whole set at least once before the term ended? I ask because I'm anxious I won't be able to go through all the questions before the term ends at the rate I am going.

3) Did you always annotate into FA or also in a separate area or notebook for concepts you had a particularly difficult time in?

4) Any other advice for what to do or not do during term 5 to maximize my step preparation?

5) During your dedicated step prep time, would you basically pick a subject, do questions then review those questions, review the concepts covered in those questions by reading the various texts and then annotate into FA throughout each day? While taking short breaks throughout the day? I ask because this is all I can imagine doing since I don't plan on taking a paid course.

6) Did you find any Kaplan videos or DIT videos particular helpful in a subject you felt weak in? Would you only watch the videos in topics you struggled with or watch all the videos?

7) How many full length practice tests did you take before the real deal including anything provided from SGU?

8) How soon before your real step exam did you take the practice one at the prometric center?

Thanks so much for your help!

-CSD6CSD6noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7438114895015996935.post-47814181360577637532014-08-26T11:24:32.676-07:002014-08-26T11:24:32.676-07:00Toppers are always appeared with awe, be it USMLE ...Toppers are always appeared with awe, be it USMLE or some other exams. I’ll respond to both your e-mail and po...Hi Jason,

I’ll respond to both your e-mail and posts in this message.

1) Biochemistry at SGU was taught by high caliber instructors. The notes were well-written and presented in an organized manner. I cannot give an opinion on which supplemental books will be of value because I only used the lecture notes given. However, after asking a handful of students who decided to supplemental their knowledge with an outside source, the consensus was BRS Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Genetics, and Rapid Review Biochemistry by Goljan.

2) As for Picmonic, I know they have been adding new topics to their card stacks and modifying the older ones. The information on there is much greater than at the time when I used their services. I can only comment on my experience and suggest using it during microbiology and continue using it until your exam.

3) Let me preface my answer by stating that I want you to succeed. I am going to say no to your request and before you get disappointed, let me show you my thought process. Studying for USMLE Step 1 is not simply following a map to the finish line. It’s a dynamic experience where each person must navigate their own hills (strengths) and valleys (weaknesses). The way to understand your terrain (knowledge base) is through exposure to new information à testing your understanding à making mistakes à readjusting your compass à challenging your newfound knowledge with more questions à ….repeat until mastery of subject. There are no shortcuts to this process. Don’t be misled thinking that all the information needed to reach your destination are written in my notes. They aren’t. Studying for Step 1 began in the very first semester. It’s impossible to condense two years of knowledge into 600 pages. Jason, please don’t shortchange yourself by thinking that you can succeed without putting in the time and effort. You must believe in yourself and everything that you have accomplished thus far. Walk the journey, learn from each and every one of your mistakes, and emerge a champion. Best of luck! Learning the neurological lesion...Hi Anonymous,

Learning the neurological lesions can be tricky. I found that High Yield Neuroscience and the required course textbook, Neuroanatomy: An Atlas of Structures, Section, and System, provided great schematic diagrams of neural tracts. I believe memorizing the origin, pathway, destination, and function, of these tracts, and its blood supply, is crucial to understanding the clinical presentations of neurological lesions. I found that drawing out the neural tracts dozens of times throughout the day helped reinforce my knowledge. You can refer to my neuroscience 2nd term advice posts for some additional information. Please don't hesitate to ask further questions.
